Frank Erle Nelson, Jr.

Age 84, sailor and gentleman, of Newark, DE, died November 3, 2008.

Frank was born in 1924 in Richmond, VA, the son of the late Ethel and Frank Erle Nelson. Frank graduated from the Georgia School of Technology and its NROTC in 1945, earning a BS degree in engineering and a commission as Ensign in the Naval Reserve and served on the Carrier Enterprise. Following WWII, Frank was an engineer with the All American Engineering Co., Wilmington, DE designing and testing aircraft catapults. Later he became a rocket engineer with Thiokol Chemical Corp., Elkton, MD, and worked on the Apollo space program. In 1964, he joined the DuPont Company and worked in the engineering department on textile fiber projects at Christina Lab and Louviers, retiring in 1982. In 1970, Frank became a founder and chairman of the Taxpayers' Lobby of Delaware, a local citizen's watchdog group. He was also a vice-president of the Henry George Foundation of America. Frank was a strong advocate of property tax reform and was a frequent contributor of letters and articles to the News Journal Newspaper. Frank was for nine years a vestryman for St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Newark, DE. He was an avid sailor and racer, and a member of the New Castle Sailing Club. He was a private pilot.

Frank is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eloise Rea Nelson of Newark; his daughter, S. Anne Rae of PA; his son, Dean E. Nelson and his wife Joanne of CT; his granddaughter, Andrea Nelson and his grandson, Thomas Nelson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold E. Nelson.

Services and interment in the church cemetery will be private.
