Prof. Powhatan Clarke, of Baltimore, Md., son of Colin and Mary Goode Lyle Clarke, was born Sept. 19, 1836, at "Warner Hall," Gloucester Co., Va. Married, 1861, Louise F. Boyce, daughter of Thomas Henry Boyce, of Rapids Point, La. Prof. Clarke was educated at the University of Virginia, graduated at the University of New York in medicine, and studied two years in Paris. Was made Surgeon of Louisiana State University in Rapides, La., of which Gen. William T. Sherman was Superintendent, and was subsequent to teh war made one of the Board of Visitors by the Governor. He entered the Confederate Army as a private in teh Crescent Regt.; was made Adjutant of 10th Mississippi Cav. at the battle of Shiloh; passed examination as Captain of Ordnance in 1863, and was made Chief of Ordnance in Brig. Gen. C. J. Polignac's Brigagde. Was made Liuet. Col. and Chief of Ordnance of District of West Louisiana and Arkansas by Lieut. Gen. S. B. Buckner, and surrendered at Natchitoches, La., in April, 1865. Removed to Baltimore, Md., in 1872, and was made Professor of Natural Sciences in Baltimore City College, which position he still held in 1886. He was Vice President of the Maryland Academy of Sciences.
