Aged 85 years and 10 days; Revolutionary War Veteran, formerly of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Source: Feb. 10, 1831 edition of Western Reserve Chronicle. John is listed in the 1830 Census for Austintown, Ohio, next to Theophilus Cotton. He is also listed in the 1820 census for Austintown, Ohio. He is also on the 1809 tax list for Austintown. Buried February 1, 1831. Rev. War, 1778-1783. Served as Quartermaster in Col. Theophilus Cotton's Regt. over 8 mos. in 1776, then as Ensign in Elijah Brooks' Company, and John Baily's Regt. to the close of the year. He was then appointed Lieutenant in Capt. Whipple's Company, in Rufus Putnam's Regt., and served in that capacity until some time in the year 1777-78. He was then appointed quartermaster to John Hixon and continued in said service until Oct. 1780. (Disputed evidence that he may have been Ranger, Private, Blacksmith Artillery, Washington Co. Militia, R1, G13, with marker.) See Roster III, p. 84, as submitted by Mrs. R.S. Winnagle, Warren, O.

Note: Joshua T. and John Cotton served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Joshua T. Cotton's Company. It is most likely that Sergeant John Cotton was the brother of Joshua T. Cotton and the son of the senior John Cotton, who served in the Revolutionary War.
