Son of John and Masha E.(Haines) Gossage. He was working as a 'printer's devil' at the Ottumwa Courier when he was ten years old. In 1867, he went to Chicago and worked there for two years. His next stop was in Sidney, Nebraska where he edited and published the Telegraph. He came to the Black Hills in December 1877 and on 5 January 1878, he began publishing the Black Hills Journal in Rapid City, Dakota Territory. In 1886, he began publishing the Rapid City Daily Journal. Mr. Gossage held several offices in the cityand was appointed to a trustee at the School of Mines.
Joseph and Alice Bower were married in June of 1882. She worked at the Journal in every capacity one can think of and was active in many community affairs.
