Jacob was born Jakob Trachsel in Frutigen to Johannes Trachsel and Susanna Zurbrugg Trachsel. Jacob is the English version of the Swiss-German Jakob, and John of Johannes. And at some point in adulthood, now in America, both Jacob and his older brother John began to go by the surname Troxell. All the descendants of these 2 brothers are Troxells. The brothers' father John, however, retained the original spelling Trachsel.
