John Jefferson Taylor and his wife Permelia Swain Spainhower Taylor with their daughter Leatha Susan Taylor (born 1868) moved in July 1869 with his parents John and Susannah Crumpley Taylor, three sisters, three brothers with their wives and children, extended Taylor family members from Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, to Utah.
They traveled by wagons, train eastward to Norfolk, Virginia, north by steamship to New York City, then westward by trains to Utah.
PAYSON, June 18 - John J. Taylor, a civil war veteran and a citizen of Payson. since July 1869, died at his home at an early hour Sunday morning.
Mr. Taylor was born June 2, 1843, at Mount Airy, NC. When he was 17 years of age he enlisted and served in an infantry company as a color-bearer in the civil war. He was in the battles of Gettysburg and Bull Run and several minor battles.
After two years' service in the war, he was shot and disabled. On September 26, 1867, he married Miss Permelia Spainhour, and they came to Utah, settling in Payson in July 1869.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his widow, seven children, thirty-six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Second ward chapel.
