CPT Murphy was born to his parents Louis Fidelis Murphy Sr. and Clara Dicaire.

Captured in the Southwest Pacific Theatre:
Philippine Islands. He was a Bataan Death March prisoner.

CPT Murphy is listed on the roster of men from the hellship "Oryoku Maru" who were transported from Manila on 12/13/1944 to Fukuoka, Japan, POW Camp #1. The Oryoku was sunk by US aircraft in Subic Bay near Olongapo on 12/15/44.

On 14 December "Oryoku Maru" was bombed and strafed by planes from the US carrier Hornet at 0300 Hours. Result: 50 dead; then after dawn the Oryoku Maru was sunk by another bomb. Many of the POWs were shot and died while trying to swim toward safety. Based upon his death record, he may have been shot, but not killed.

CPT Murphy was among the survivors.

He was later placed aboard the Brazil Maru. The Brazil Maru was bombed, a bomb hit the hold and killed about another 300. About 900 POWs remained and they were moved back to the Brazil Maru.

CPT Murphy was again among the survivors.

Based upon available documentation, CPT Murphy was finally transported to Japan and imprisoned at Fukouka City, POW Camp # 1.

CPT Murphy is listed on the "Death Roster" for the Fukuoka City, Japan, POW Camp #1, Kashii (Pine Tree Camp) Kyushu Island, where he died of debility as a result of wounds incurred during transport to Japan.

His remains were recovered and sent home. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO, USA
