EASLEY, June 10 – George Washington Turner, 102 Railroad St. in the Alice community, died at a Greenville hospital at 3:45 p.m. Monday after a serious illness of one week. A son of the late James R. and Mary Corbin Turner, he was a native and lifelong resident of Pickens County. He had made his home in Easley for a number of years. He was employed in the card room of the Alice Mill for 37 years before his retirement about six years ago. Before this time he was employed in the Glenwood Mills. He was a member of the Eastatoe Baptist Church and of Dogwood Camp 1002, WOW, of Easley. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida Volrath Turner; 5 sons, Charles R. Turner of Easley, George W. Turner Jr., of Central, Ernest Carrol Turner of Belville, Ill., Henry Furman Turner of Easley and Joe Donnie Turner of Easley; 6 daughters, Mrs. Jim Howard of Pickens, Mrs. James Young, Mrs. Jack Tate, Mrs. C. W. Looper, Miss Sarah Turner and Miss Carolyn Turner, all of Easley; 1 brother, O'Dell Turner of Greenville; 2 sisters, Mrs. Grover Moore of Quantico, VA., and Mrs. Annie Johnson of Westminster; 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Cross Roads Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. George Holcombe, the Rev. Milo Hayes and the Rev. Herman Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Harley Hughey, Ivey Holcombe, Lester Collins, Joe Bagwell, Edward Gibson and J. T. Durham. Escort of honor will be John Cantrell, Harry Phillips, Jones Parkins, Ab Talley, Al McCall, E. H. Atkins, Bert Brown, O. L. Brannock, Harvey Ellison, Clark Gwinn, Jack Griffin, Guy Gilstrap and the Rev. Carl Holcombe and Jim Finley. The body is at the Robinson Funeral Home in Easley. I will be carried to the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday and will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
