The family moved to the United States in 1916 and settled in Spokane, WA. His father Matt worked at the Lumber Mill, his mother raised the children adding 2 girls to the family, Mary and Elizabeth (Betty). Mike went to Gonzaga University. He later took business courses and secured a position as a foreman at the new Kinzua Mill in eastern Oregon. The family picked up and moved there for new opportunities. There he met Jane Dickerson and they married in 1936 when she was fresh out of high school. Mike and Jane moved to Hood River and then to Bend, OR where he became general manager at Oregon Trail Box Factory. They had 3 daughters, Marsha, Nena and Donna.
