son of Howard AND Hattie Leonard Redeye Sr., 93, of Center Road, Jimersontown, passed away peacefully Thursday (Feb. 9, 2006) at the home of his daughter, Carolyn Harris of Division St.
Born on July 20, 1912 in Quaker Bridge, he was the son of the late Howard and Hattie Nephew Redeye. In 1937 he was married to the former Eleanor Bowen who predeceased him in 1976. In 1977 he married the former Jeanette Peters Holmes, who predeceased him in 1995.
Mr. Redeye retired in 1977 as a division superintendent in Hornell for the former Erie Railroad, where he had been employed for over 50 years of service and will be remembered as an inspirational role model.
He was a member of the Jimersontown Presbyterian Church, was and enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, the Deer Clan and was a tribal councillor for the Seneca Nation from 1933 through 1984.
Mr. Redeye witnessed the Seneca Nation's growth and development from the tribal council meetings at the Shongo Court House through the post Kinzua Dam and expressway construction and the New York State Temperance League where he served as its president in 1963
He was a member of Cattaraugus Lodge 239 F & AM, Jamestown Consistory, Ismalia Shrine of Buffalo, Gowanda Shrine Club, Cattaraugus County Shrine Club, McKean County Shrine Club of Bradford, Pa., National Rifle Association and the Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in December 1992.
Mr. Redeye volunteered to transport people for medical care: helped shut-ins and he was voted the Senior Citizen of the Year by the Seneca Nation.
He volunteered at the Salamanca Rail Museum.
He installed track for the cable car at the former Fentier Village and he laid the track for the caboose at the Salamanca Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center.
Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn (Willard) Harris of Salamanca, Sandra Brady of Salamanca, Lana Redeye of Jimersontown; two sons, Leonard Redeye Jr. of Salamanca and Laverne Redeye of Steamburg; three step-children, Don (Betty) Holmes of New Haven, Indiana, Julie (Art) Cooney of Salamanca, Janet (Jerry) Varqueson of Jamestown; 12 grandchildren: Jonathan Harris of Buffalo, Jerald Harris, Drew Rozler, Todd (Terra) Rozler, Heather Rozler, Cathy Redeye (all of Salamanca), Robert (Odie) Porter of Fayetteville, Martin (Michele) Redeye of Gross Point, Mich., Karen Redeye of Lake Forest, Ill., Nancy (John) Cappellino of Eden, Maureen Redeye and Amy Harrison, both of Steamburg and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Jefferson Redeye, Clinton Redeye and Stuart Redeye Sr.; two sisters, Ina Gordon and Florence Lay.


Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St.


Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home, followed by services in the Jimersontown Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. with Pastor Brandon Crouse, of the Jimersontown Presbyterian Church/Steamburg God Missionary Church, officiating.
