Former Afton resident Fern Melville Holdaway, 93, died July 1, 1999 in Spokane, WA. Funeral services were held in Fillmore, UT on July 8, 1999. Burial was in the Fillmore City Cemetery. She was born Feb 14, 1906, in Fillmore UT to George and Nellie Ashman Melville. She married Oris J. Holdaway June 2, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was raised and educated in Fillmore. Following her marriage, she lived and raised her family in Afton, where her husband was principal of the Star Valley High School from 1931 to 1956. After leaving Afton she and her husband returned to Fillmore. She has resided in Spokane for the past two years.
She was active in the LDS Church and served in the Relief Society, Primary and Sunday School at both stake and ward levels. She was actively engaged in the retail industry for many years. she and her husband owned and operated the western Auto Supply Co. store in Afton during the mid-1950s. She also served in various capacities with the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Afton and Fillmore civic organizations and the Millard County Cancer Society. She is survived by sons Donald, Spokane, WA, Ronald, Fairfax Station VA and Scott Rancho Mirage, CA four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and son John. Another son, Gordon died in infancy.
