Fred was only 8 years old when he drowned in the Hudson River in front of Brlggs' dock. He stumbled and fell off a boat of which his father was chief engineer. His remains were recovered three days later. Twenty years later, (1917) his brother, Harry would also drown in the Hudson River in a boating accident.
