Pioneer Banker of Ryan Dies after Long Illness
M. H. BARRETT, Sr. known as RASH BARRETT, president of the People's Bank and Trust Co. of Ryan, one of the largest land owners in the county and one of the most prominent citizens of the state, died Thursday, March 26, after an illness of several weeks. The funeral was Sunday afternoon at the Tabernacle at Ryan, probably the largest crowd ever assembled at a funeral in the country. The services were conducted by Rev. M. F. SULLIVAN of Coalgate, former pastor of the Methodist Church at Ryan, and Mrs. CASSIE BROWN.

He was the son of Harris and Rebecca Emilene Barrett. He moved with his family by oxcart from Tennessee to Journegan Thicket, Grayson County, Texas, at the age of 3. He worked as a clerk in a dry goods store and then became a druggist and registered pharmacist. He married Nellie Jones in Paris, Texas, in 1893. He moved his family to Ryan, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory in 1893. In addition to a general store, he operated a loan company that would become the Peoples Bank and Trust Co. in 1906.
He and Nellie were the parents of Rebecca, Marcella, Amelia, Silas Sapp, Jones Harris., Morris Horatio Jr., and Charley Ben Barrett.
