The son of Elias Booz & Hannah (Drescher) Eyster, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Dickinson Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, August 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC August 17 as a private with Co. H, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry (60th Pa). He was wounded February 28, 1863, at Hartwood Church, Virginia, and captured at the battle of Gettysburg July 3, 1863, returning to duty date unknown. He honorably discharged at term's end August 24, 1864.

He married Margaret T. Beistle and fathered Harry E. D. (b. 10/??/70), Annie Catherine (b. 04/15/72), Ella May (b. 12/11/76 - married a Naugle), Helena Margaret (b. 04/22/86), and Ray (b. 01/11/89, d. 01/18/89). In 1870, he lived in Jackson Township, York County, but resided in Cumberland County most of his life.
