James was the son of Jacob HUFFORD and Elizabeth ALLEN, and the brother of Sally Ann, Surrilda, Nancy Jane, David, Jacob B., Elizabeth, John N., and Ellen.

Born in Indiana, James and some others in his family moved to California in search of gold. He married Rebecca WINTERS and was widowed sometime before the 1880 census. By the time of the 1880 census, James was working as a teamster and listed with his mother, his sister, and his sister's husband (Obadiah Cushman). They were in Cherokee California, which is in Oregon Township, Butte County.

By the 1900 census, James was in Oregon Township, Butte County, California. He was living by himself and working as a gold miner.

James was a Mason.
