The son of James & Eve (Frey) Alexander, in 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in or around Greene Township, Franklin Couny, where he lived most of his life. He stood 5' 11" and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Chambersburg October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.

He married Susan A. Rook January 1, 1869, and fathered Anna K. (b. @1873), William McClure (b. 12/22/75), Ellen J. (b. 08/??/77), and John T. (b. @1878).
