Raymond Bateman, 34, former Olympian, dies.

RINGOES - Raymond H. Bateman Jr. died Thursday after collapsing while playing squash at Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater. He was 34.

Mr. Bateman was born in Somerville and lived in Branchburg most of his life before moving to Ringoes about five years ago.

He was a 1974 graduate of Somerville High School and attended Johnson State College in Johnson, Vt., and the University of Vermont from 1976 to 1979.

Mr. Bateman ran the Bateman Agency in Somerville with his cousin, Doug Batemen who formed the independent insurance agency with him in 1988. Previously he worked for Hughes-Plumer and Assoiciates in Somerville from 1982 to 1987 and the Elizabeth Agency in Clark from 1980 to 1982.

For the past 10 years he was a well known New Jersey dirt track modified race car driver, competing at the Flemington Race Track and other tracks in New Jersey, Maryland and New York.

Mr. Bateman also was a three time U.S. doubles luge champion and competed on the U.S. Olympic Luge Team in 1980 and 1984.

He was an accomplished squash player and was a New Jersey regional squash champion.

Mr. Bateman was a member of the Somerville-Raritan Exchange Club, Raritan Valley Country Club, North New Jersey Squash and Racquets Association, Governor's Council on Phsical Fitness and Sports, The 200 Club of Somerset, Young Insurance Professionals, North Branch Reformed Church and the Three Bridges Reformed Church.

Mr. Bateman suffered from a serious heart disorder, aorticstenosis, which affected the functioning of one of the valves of his heart and had undergone open heart surgery twice.

Surviving are his wife, Robin Roberts Bateman; a son, Raymond 3, and a daughter, Amy; his father, frmer state senator and 1978 gubernatorial candidate Ray Bateman, and mother, Joan Bateman, both of Branchberg; two sisters, Caren Batemen-Chanoch of Neshanic Station and Joananne Bateman of Branchburg; and two brothers,Christopher S. of Neshanic Station and Michael of Branchburg.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at North Branch Reformed Church.

Burial will be at North Branch Reformed Church Cemetery, North Branch.

Arrangements are by Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home, 10 W. End Ave., Somerville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Somerse County Heart Association, the Matheny School or to the North Branch Reformed Church.
