Thomas Lamb was born in Tipperary Ireland, March 17, 1842 and departed this life at his home in Mt. Hope, Kansas, April 10 1923, age 81 years and 23 days.
His father and mother passed to the Eternal Worth while he was yet a lad of some 8 yrs. He was then cared for in the home of an uncle for a number of years.
When about 17, feeling the lure of the Western World, he emigrated to American in 1864, making his headquarters for a time at Boston, Mass. In Jan. 1876 he enlisted in the Regular Army at Boston, after a short time at Carlisle, Pa. in company with some 200 others was sent to Ft. Riley, Kans., where he served under General Custer, in the Indian wars. During the years spent in this service, he passed through some thrilling experiences and through many hardships and privations known only to an American soldier. After 5 yrs. of Army service he was honorably discharged.
On March 21 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Nemmo of Elizabethtown Ky. To this union 6 children were born, 2 dying in infancy. After 2 yrs. spent at Elizabethtown, he moved with his family to Crawford County, Kansas in Jan. 1875. In the year 1886 he moved to Scott Co where he resided for 32 years, rearing his family, enduring the many privations incident to frontier life.
He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity holding membership for a good many years in Scott City, later transferring to Mt. Hope. He was a member of Wichita Consistory No.2 and of the Eastern Star of Mt. Hope.
Brother Lamb was brought up in the Episcopal church, christened and confirmed while yet a lad. While residing at Bulah, Crawford Co he united with the M. E. Church in 1877 remaining a faithful member until death at which time his membership was with the Mt. Hope M.E. church and rejoiced in it's services, attending his last service within a week of his death.
About 5 yrs. ago feeling the infirmities of old age coming on,he and his wife came to Mt. Hope that they might be near the children. Brother Lamb was a good man, a kind father,a loving husband.
He leaved to mourn their loss his aged companion and 5 children, Mrs. W.H. Brown of Hutchinson; Wm. Edward lamb, Scott City; Mrs. Mary Johnson, Wichita; Charles Lamb of Pueblo, Colo.; and Mrs.Alta Carter, an adopted daughter of Wichita; 18 grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Mt. Hope M.E. Church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon. The Rev. A.R. Brown of the Christian Church giving the Masonic address, followed by the pastor, the Rev. A.R. Julian who spoke of teh consolations of the Gospel and the Christian hope. Interment was made in the Mt. Hope cemetery. the local Masonic Lodge being in charge of the committal services.
