WILLIAM GLAVIN OBITUARY
Wm H. (Howard) Glavin passed from this life on October 15, 2008 surrounded by his loving family and his caregiver, Jean Lively. Howard was born on November 27, 1921, the only child of Christina Meyer and William Fount Glavin.

His father was an engineer with the Corps of Engineers working on the Missouri River. Howard attended 24 elementary schools in eight years. When he was ready for high school his parents decided to settle in one town for the duration of his high school years. That town turned out to be Atchison, Kansas. He attended Atchison High School where he enjoyed success scholastically and athletically. He loved football and basketball. He was named one of five players to receive Northeast Kansas League All Star designation in basketball in 1938.

When Howard was 15 years old his father died unexpectedly. Howard cared lovingly for his mother, Tena, until her death in 1976.

Howard joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served as a bombardier with the 15th Air Force. He was stationed in North Africa and then based in Cherignola, Italy, where he completed his 50 missions. During one mission his plane went down in Genoa Bay where the surviving crew floated for hours waiting for British Air and Sea Rescue. He continued his service to our country with the National Guard retiring as a major.

He married Mary Kathryn Gorrell of Atchison on Sept. 18, 1944. Their long and happy marriage ended with her death on April 23, 1988. His youngest son, Timothy, died on June 2, 1988.

After the war he continued his schooling, attending Northwest Missouri State in Maryville. He played basketball and football for the Bearcats. After graduation he accepted a coaching job at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri. He served as teacher, assistant coach in football, and head basketball and golf coach until 1961. At that time he became the head football and basketball coach at Center South Junior High School in Kansas City. He retired in 1986, and finally had time to indulge his love for golf. His retirement job was at Minor Park Golf Course as starter.

Howard is mourned by four living children, Sandy Nickel and husband, Tom, William (Bill) Glavin, Carol Connole and husband, Jim, and Patrick Glavin and wife, Tina. He was a loving grandfather to George Kopp and wife, Megan, Debby Allmon and husband, Mike, Amy Baker and husband, Eric, and Christy DeFrain and husband, Brian, Matt Glavin, Meghan Dadkhah and husband, Iman, Melissa Stevens and husband, Kevin, Edward Shipman and wife, Rose, Nick Connole, Angela Connole, Karyn Layton and husband, Matt, Colleen Douglas and husband, Jeff, and John Patrick Glavin. He was the proud and loving great-grandfather to George and Vincent Kopp, Mary and Robert Allmon, Abby and Hannah Baker, Trevor and Mia Hill, William DeFrain, Sofia and Kareem Dadkhah, Alex and Emily Stevens and Breanna and Aeden Layton.

We would like to thank Dad's caregiver, Jean Lively, for her dedication to his care and comfort and for her love and care for all of us. We appreciate the staff at Villa St. Joseph who loved to kid around with Coach. Thank you for your care for him. Thank you as well to the staff at Grace Hospice for assisting Dad and our family through the end of life process. Dad remained a teacher to the very end. He modeled for all of us the process of ending a life well lived with dignity, humor and lots of quiet courage.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Friday, October 17, 2008 at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road. The rosary will be said at 7 PM. The funeral will be held at Mt. Moriah & Freeman at 9 AM Saturday, October 18, 2008. Graveside services will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, Kansas, at 12:00 PM Saturday. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to St. Elizabeth School or to Special Olympics. (Arr: Mt. Moriah & Freeman 816-942-2004)
