Unity – James R. Kenney, 71, died September 10, 1990, at a Waterville hospital, after a long illness. He was born in Cambridge November 12, 1918, the son of Ralph and C. Fern (Sawyer) Kenney.

He was a radar man with the U. S. Navy during World War II, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He was with the U. S. Fleet that accepted the Japanese Surrender. He moved to Unity in 1943. After World War II, he owned and operated a poultry farm there until 1960. He owned two restaurants, one in Fairfield and one in Unity, and was the proprietor of Jim's Peeled Potatoes until his retirement in 1985.

He helped organize the Unity Volunteer Ambulance Corps and served as a volunteer for several years. He was a member of the Unity Volunteer Fire Department. He served as scoutmaster for several years and was a former Unity selectman. He was a member of Star in the West Masonic Lodge of Unity and the Fairfield IOOF.

He served on the board of directors at Waterville Osteopathic Hospital. He was a member of the Destroyers Escort Sailors Association, the Antique Treasures of Maine Antique Automobile Club and the Good Sam Recreational Vehicle Club. He attended a Baptist Church in Florida.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Ruth (Frost) Kenney of Unity; two sons, James Peter Kenney of Windsor, Conn., and John Kenney of Bucksport; one daughter, Mary Kenney of Unity; three sisters, Hilda Wilson of Succasunna, N.J., Velma Masaros of Benson, Ariz., and Catherine Dodge of Shady Grove, Fla.; four grandchildren, Shannon, Jeffrey, Alan and Lance Kenney; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Unity Union Church, with the Rev. Charles Kinney officiating. Burial was at Pond Cemetery, Unity.
