S/O Stephen & Nancy Lassitter. (Recorded by K. Ned Beasley)([email protected])
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Jesse Lassitter was the son of Stephen Lassiter (1761-1820) and Nancy (Uzzell) Lassiter (1767-1838). His parents are listed in the 1790 Census, the 1st U S Census conducted after our Nation became a free country, following the American Revolution. Lenoir County was referred to as Dobbs County at that time, changed to Lenoir County as of 1800. Jesse was born on June 29, 1800 in Dobbs County, North Carolina. He married Sally Wood in Lenoir County on June 13, 1827; they were blessed with eight children, however only four would live to adulthood and only two of those would have children. [Prior to their marriage (and possibly afterwards) Jesse took over the family's mercantile business in @1820, per Linda Dukes (see flowers left in 2014).]Their first born child was Lucy Jane**, born Aug 11, 1828. She grew up to marry Moses Joyner. Her sister, little Susan, was born in 1830, but died in 1841. Jesse W. was born in 1836, but he died in 1841 as well. Sally Ann was born in 1840 and lived to be 25, but was unwed when she passed in 1865. Thomas was born in 1837 and joined the fight in the Civil War, fighting for the Confederacy. Sadly, he was killed in action in 1862. Stephen was born in 1832 and was one of the only two or three children who lived to have children and to marry, in that order. He only lived to the age of 40 years, however, which is still not very old, but he fathered six children including a son who bore his name. Another son named Jesse was born in @1850; he married Ellen Ennis and fathered at least three children: Robert B., Blannie E., and Hattie Elizabeth. I need to find out more about him and his family, if possible.
Jesse Lassitter was a farmer who farmed property in the Bear Creek District of Kinston and Mosley Hall in Lenoir County, North Carolina, per the 1860 U S Census, valued at $44,800.00. The family also had slaves at that time. After the death of his father in 1820, he had taken control of the family mercantile business*. Jesse, Sally, Stephen, Thomas, Sally Ann and Jesse, age 11, are listed in the Census. [How things would change in the next five years!] Jesse Sr. lived to be 66 yrs. of age. He was buried with his beloved wife and all of his children but Stephen at the family cemetery that bares his name in LaGrange, Lenoir County. Stephen Lassiter is buried at Fairview Cemetery which is also at LaGrange, Lenoir County, North Carolina, with his sons and other Lassiters (hence the spelling of his last name?).
Jesse and Sally are my 3rd great grandparents on my father's side of my family.
I wish to again Thank K. Ned Beasley for his graciousness in transferring their memorials to me so their stories could be told.

**Lucy Jane and Moses Joyner had two daughters, Susan S., b.Jun 17, 1849 who never married. Their other daughter, Sarah "Sallie" Ann Joyner, married Thomas H. Wood on Aug 19, 1875. They also had a son, Jesse L. Joyner, b.1851. Their nephew, Thomas Lassiter Warters, came to live with them after his father, Stephen Lassiter, had married Loucretia Pitts, had another son, then died in 1872. He stayed with them until they both passed away and they willed their farm to him. It was instrumental in his creating a business both selling tobacco and fine quality cigars. Thank you to Rose (Find a Grave member #47158534) who sent me a message verifying Sallie's married name of Lassiter, not Wood. I've been able to make the connection now in both my family tree and Find a Grave.
