Nancy Uzzell was a twin (her twin sister was Susannah, who married Burwell Westbrook); Nancy and Susannah were born of the union of Thomas Uzzell, Jr. (1715-1789) and Sarah (Hines) Uzzell (1708-1798), a widow, previously married to a Mr. Herring. Thomas Uzzell, Jr. was a widower, having been previously married to Mary Catherine (Parr) Uzzell, a Quaker, who had passed away prior to 1765 after they had been blessed with four children, Zilpha, Thomas, Elisha and Eunice. Thomas owned large tracts of land, living on some which he called "Nature's Bounty". His father, Captain Thomas Uzzell, Sr., had fled France as a Hugaunot, via Ireland to Virginia to convey Cromwell's Ulster Colony prior to 1713. He had initially settled in Isle of Wight, Virginia, owning much land in that colony, also donating land for a church later named Uzzell's Church. He was involved in the Indian trades and relocated to North Carolina which is where he passed. His son, therefore, lived his life in what was then named Dobbs County, North Carolina.[It was renamed Lenoir County after 1800.] Following the marriage of Thomas and Sarah Uzzell in 1764, they were to be blessed with twin daughters, whom they named Susannah and *Nancy, b. May 19, 1767; both daughters lived long lives. Their other children were Isham, b.1766, and Thomas.
