Hubbard enlisted 25 Jan 1865 and was mustered into the service on 13 Feb 1865 in Co F, 1st Minn Heavy Arty as a Private. He contracted chronic diarrhea about 25 Feb 1865 and later contracted measles. He died of pneumonia on 6 Apr 1865, in a Chattanooga, TN, hospital.

He married Martha C Tenorillgar (sp) on 18 Oct 1858. They had an adopted child, Charles P Axtell (B: 28 Apr 1862). Martha applied for, and received, a widow's pension based on Hubbard's military service.

After Hubbard's death, Martha remarried to a man named James Foley on 19 March 1867 (per marriage certificate) in Blue Earth Co, MN.
