She was a Charter member of Perdido Bay United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Sweet Bay Garden Club, Life member of Federation of Gardeners, and member of the Pensacola Camellia Club. She loved gardening, cooking and her family. Gennell was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Bessie Elliott of Kingsport, TN; her husband, John Milton Carter, Jr. of Pensacola, FL: her brother, Dr. James B. Elliott of Kingsport, TN and her Grandson, David Carter of Kingsport, TN. She is survived by her sons: John Milton Carter, III and Phyllis of Kingsport, TN; William S. Carter and Joan of Pensacola; Frederick H. Carter and Patricia of El Paso, TX; James S. Carter and Diana of Pensacola: Richard B. Carter and Randal G. Carter of Pensacola. Her Grandchildren and her 11 Great-Grandchildren.
