MERCED, Sept. 23 - Fred Ragsdale, 70, Merced sand and gravel contractor and an old time resident of this community, was found dead at the wheel of his truck yesterday on the Oakdale Highway a half mile east of the Amsterdam School by Ed Gasper, Amsterdam dairyman.

Deputy Coroner Lou Seavy said death apparently was caused by a heart ailment. Gasper told investigating officers he first noticed the truck shortly after 9 A.M., when he saw it go off the highway. He said he thought a tire of the truck had blown out and that the driver had stopped to repair it. He said he noticed the truck was in the same spot about a half hour later and went over to investigate. He found the driver in an unconscious state and immediately notified the California Highway Patrol.

Sergeant Donald Halterman and Officer James Guard of the highway patrol, who investigated, said the truck, which was loaded with sand, was heading in the direction of Merced. It had run off the road and scraped along several fence posts before coming to a stop. The ignition key had not been turned off, Sergeant Halterman said.

Ragsdale was born in Monroe County, Mo., in March of 1873, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ragsdale. He spent his youth on his father's cattle ranch in Missouri and attended elementary schools there. He came to Merced when he was 23 years old, worked for a time on a ranch owned by his brother in law. In 1908 he entered the livery stable business, operating his business on the present site of the El Capitan Hotel. Later he purchased the southwest corner property at Seventeenth and N Streets, operating his stable across the street from the present Strand Theater for a number of years.

Ragsdale later acquired a garage. He continued operating his business at Seventeenth and N Streets until 1915, when he sold his property.

After selling the livery and garage business, Ragsdale shipped mules from this area to Louisiana. For the past several years he has been active in the sand and gravel business, owning a gravel pit on the Merced River near the Shaffer Bridge. It is believed he was returning to Merced from his river pits when he died.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary S. Ragsdale, of Merced; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Scholl of Arcadia and Mrs. Max Gilstrap of Boston; a son, Dr. Frederick F. Ragsdale, of Paso Robles; two brothers, James Ragsdale of Los Altos and T. W. Ragsdale of Shilbina, Mo., and a sister, Mrs. George Batsell, of Missouri.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the Ivers & Alcorn Mortuary.

Fred Ragsdale can properly be classed as one of Merced's old timers, as he has lived here for forty-four years. He came in 1896, his sister and brother-in-law having preceded him here. For a time he worked on his brother-in-law's ranch, and in 1908 he entered the livery business, his barns having been located on the present site of the El Capital Hotel. In 1912 he purchased the southwest corner of the 17th and N Streets, across from the present Strand Theatre. He continued the livery business at this location until 1915, when he rented the space for a garage. He ultimately disposed of this property in 1927, realizing a handsome profit on the investment.

For some time Mr. Ragsdale engaged in shipping mules from here to Louisiana, but for a number of years past he has been in the sand and grovel [sic] business in a large way. He has his own gravel pit and bunker on the Merced River, and he is the owner of the old Terry homestead.

Mr. Ragsdale was born in Monroe County, Missouri on March 19, 1873, the son of Thomas W. and Betty Ragsdale. His father, who had a 400 acre farm in Missouri, was a breeder of short horn cattle. After completing his schooling in his native county, Fred Ragsdale helped look after his father's herd of cattle until he was twenty-three years old, and then moved to California.

He married Miss Mary Saunders, and they became the parents of three children: Alwilda, who graduated from San Francisco State Teachers College and is now the wife of Charles Scholl, residing in Los Angeles; Dr. Frederick Francis Ragsdale, who graduated from the University of California medical school and is now practicing in Paso Robles; Zilpha Ida, a graduate of Lowell High School in San Francisco, and now the wife of Max Gilstrap who is a lecturer.

Mr. and Mrs. Ragsdale are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Ragsdale is a member of the Eastern Star and of the Merced Women's Club.
