Civil War Service:
Two days after his sixteenth birthday, Gilbert lied about his age and enlisted as a Private on 22 August 1862 listing his birth year as 1844. Mustered into Company B, 146th Infantry Regiment New York on 11 October 1862; which was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. Participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg and the "Mud March" where he likely received his injury, a "rupture" (double hernia) from lifting ammunition boxes. He would suffer from this injury his entire life. Received a disability discharge Company B, 146th Infantry Regiment New York on 11 March 1863 at Falmouth, VA.

He kept a journal of the year 1890 describing Pennsylvania farm life including the near-death of his daughter Millie during the 1889-90 Russian Flu (the grip) pandemic and then her marriage to Will Burch. He also mentions stopping by the Pension Office to pick up a new truss.

He and wife Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 27 June 1919.

He passed away never seeing 1924, dying on New Years Eve.
