BLAIN - Robert R. Matthews, 89, of Back Hollow Road, Blain, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at a step daughter's home in Mechanicsburg.
Bob was born March 6, 1919 in Middletown, PA, to the late Robert E. and Elizabeth Reese Matthews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Cooper of Leola.
Bob had been a salesman for Armstrong World Industries and other floor companies. He was a World War II Army Veteran and the recipient of five Bronze Stars. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. In addition to the 5 Bronze Stars he received the Good Conduct Medal and American Theatre Service Medal.
He was a member of the former Memorial Methodist Church and Pioneer Class of Memorial Lutheran Church, both in Harrisburg. He was a former Christmas tree grower and a member of the Pennsylvania Christmas Tree Grower's Association. He was a life member of VFW Post 7463, New Bloomfield; a member of American Legion North Harrisburg Post 1001, and lifetime member of the NRA. He loved turkey hunting and owned the Bull Run Camp.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy L. Keller Matthews; three step daughters, Debbie L. Lynch, Mechanicsburg, Linda M. Lynch, Shippensburg, Sheila K. Lynch and fiance', Joseph A. Imbrognio, Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Josephine Baum, Hershey and Jane Matthews, Camp Hill; four nieces and two nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2008 in the Nickel Funeral Home, 3626 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, with the Rev. Ronnie Lynch officiating. Burial with military honors by New Bloomfield VFW Post 7463, will be at 2:15 p.m., Tuesday, following the service in the Blain Cemetery
