Ella, as she was better known, was born on a river boat on the Mississippi River just outside of Kentucky.
On August 1, 1910 she married Tuxie in Muskogee, Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA and they had seven children (Verdy , Lela, Tracy, Legora, Ponie, Mohee, and a still living daughter) before they divorced, c. 1932.
After the divorce, Ella moved her children to Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas, USA and then Pueblo, Pueblo, Colorado, USA where she remained until her death.
She was of the Pentecostal faith and had very beautiful thigh-length hair, which she kept in a bun during the day and slept in braids.
