Painesville Ohio Born 21 July 1773, in West Hartford Conn. Moved to Kinderhook NY when a child, than in 1792 his father and family moved to Avon, Western NY. At the age of 25, Ebenezer decided to head West, his motto being "Westward Still." When he arrived in the Reserve (Northeast Ohio), he stopped in Mentor. He cleared a piece of land and built a log cabin. At the time, his domicile was scantily furnished, if an article was lost or worn out, he could not easily replace it. St Illustrate this, he would grease his only pair of shoes, at night he would place them just outside the door to the cabin. One morning he found his shoes to be missing, thinking some of his friends were playing a joke on him, he went about barefoot. While walking through the woods, he found one of his missing shoes, chewed on by a wolf. He was unable to purchase another pair until he headed back to NY to visit his family. In Erie PA he stopped and purchased some new shoes. In 1799, he told his friends that he would come back a married man. While visiting his family in NY, he meet Miss Charlotte Adams, they married May 5, 1800 and started back to Mentor Ohio. In returning to Mentor, Mr. Merry was accompanied by his new wife and his brother Hosmer Merry. There were six children born to this union in Mentor: Sarah, Mary, Julia, Martin, Samuel and Lucy, after they moved to Milan they had Elizabeth, Ebenezer and Charlotte. The family moved to Milan in Nov 1814.
