Mary came to Oregon by wagon train in 1852. Her father became a gold miner at Gold Beach where he was killed by Indians in 1856 who also murdered Mary's three brothers and captured her, her mother and her tiny sister. The three captives were later exchanged by the Indians for some Indian women who had been captured by the whites.
Mary Giesel married Harrison G. Blake at Gold Beach when she was about 20 years old. They lived for many years on a stock ranch near Chetco in Curry County.
