Dr. Whitfield was the son of Col. Nathan Bryan Whitfield and Betty Green Cobb. He was first married to Annie Watson Barbour (Barber) who died very young, age 23. They were married 14 Feb 1877. After her death he married Racheal Donnell Patterson, daughter of James Norwood Patterson and Martha W. "Mary" Ruffin on 20 Dec 1899.
