VIOLA KATIE ''GRANNY'' PERKINS died Aug. 8, 2001, at her Anchorage home. A recipient of experimental cardiac surgery in 1954, she was expected to live no longer than 1964. Viola was 84 years old when she died. A service was held at her church, South Anchorage Church of Christ, 7800 Stanley Drive. Rev. William Clary officiated. Pallbearers were Don Barnes, Scot Risley, Michael Mansfield, James Harris, Bryan Trombley and Adam Trombley.

Mrs. Perkins was born Viola Jackson on Nov. 27, 1916, in Byers, Texas. Her family wrote: ''In July 1935, she began her 53-year marriage to Albert Loyd Perkins. He was the love and inspiration of her life. As a young woman, she attended the nursing school at Carrie Tingley Hospital in Hot Springs, N.M. In 1941 the couple and their young daughter, Wanda, moved to El Paso, Texas, where Loyd and Viola lived until their move to Anchorage in 1982. ''Viola's singular devotion to her family was epitomized in her care of Loyd during his extended battle with cancer from 1983 to 1988, when he died. In a life given to the care of others, this was her most fulfilling accomplishment. ''She possessed physical and spiritual beauty and a deep well of personal courage. Viola lived her life according to her Christian principles and never wavered in her faith. She extended her love and energy to many, many children (of all ages) -- to any one who needed a 'Granny.' ''

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Don Barnes; grandchildren, Cheri and Michael Mansfield and Scot and Sherri Risley; great-granddaughters, Katie and Tana; and nieces and nephew, Betty Patterson, Joyce Schafer, Carolyn Compton and Leon Atchison. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army. Funeral arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
