My mother, Stella Louise Dove Headen was one of nine children born to James Lawson Dove and Margaret Effie Elliott Dove. She was born in Pelham, SC on April 21, 1924 and died in Canon, GA on June 22, 1990.

She and my father, Lee Roy Headen married on May 31, 1941 in Greenville, SC and were married for 49 years. Together they had eleven children, including two sets of twins. Five of those children died as infants.

When I look down the row of Baby headstones, I remember what a strong woman she was. She was as gentle and kind as she was strong and beautiful.

She had a way with words and this "special look" that made you know she meant business, but she was humorious, loving, the core of our family and the sunshine of our home.

She loved nature. Especially roses. Her favorite things in life were growing flowers and vegetables, and taking her grandchildren camping and trout fishing in the mountain streams.

She will be remembered for her wonderful meals and all the extra plates she set out when the neighbors or family showed up at mealtime, the way she cared for her family, the way she respected other people and her famous words, "If you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything at all." OR "If you didn't learn something today, you weren't listening."

Not a day passes without thought of her and the wonderful things she stood for. She was my mother, my teacher and my best friend. I love her and miss her from the depths of my heart and soul. She was truly, one of a kind.
