THOMAS CLIFFORD POTTER
1847-1906
Dr. Potter, son of Thomas Evans Potter and Mary Reigert Baker, was born in Philadelphia, Fisher's Lane near Second Street Pike, on September 5, 1847.
He attended Germantown Academy and later went to boarding school.
Dr. Potter entered the service of the United States Army at the age of fifteen years, where he served in Co. H, Gray Reserves, in 1863 and 1864. He was officially sworn into service April 11, 1865, and received his discharge July 31, 1865.
He was a veteran of the Union League Regiment, was sergeant-major of the 215th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers; elected a member of the Veteran Corps, March 10, 1896, and was appointed assistant surgeon of this organization in January, 1905. He was a member of Ellis Post No. 6, G. A. R., which he joined November 13, 1902.
Three years after the war closed he began the study of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his degree in 1871. After serving as a resident physician for eighteen months to the Philadelphia Hospital, be took up the practice of medicine in Germantown and quickly rose to distinction in his profession.
Dr. Potter was active in the establishment of the Germantown Hospital, and for many years served on the staff, later on the consulting staff of that institution. He was a member of the Philadelphia County Medical Society; Medical Society of Pennsylvania; American Medical Association; and a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, December, 1885.
Dr. Potter in 1876 married Mary Marshall Philips, a daughter of the late Moro Philips of Philadelphia, from whom he secured a divorce. Of this marriage there was one son, Thomas Clifford Potter, Jr. In 1899 Dr. Potter married Santa Elizabeth Bond Reed, widow of Judge Henry Reed.
There was never a more self-sacrificing physician; beloved by all not only as a physician, but staunch friend and adviser.
His untiring administration to the sick and poor began to tell upon him the last few years of his practice. It was in April, 1905, while returning from a trip abroad, that he suffered a severe attack of angina pectoris. He rallied from this attack and returned to Germany later in the year to take the baths, which proved of no avail. He returned to his home in Germantown where he died on January 7, 1906.
