Son of Job and Mary Huffman Cassel, Jacob was born in Waynesville, Warren Co, OH. He moved with his parents to Fountain Co, IN, when he was about 13 years old. In Dec 1840 Jacob married Mary Ann Malinda Young, daughter of Thomas Young of Fountain Co. Jacob and Mary Ann Malinda were the parents of four children: Henry Clay (1841), Franklin Columbus (1842), Melissa (1845) and Jefferson Montgomery (1846).
The family moved to West Pine township in Benton Co, IN.

Jacob was a Township Trustee and County Commissioner for Benton County, IN, in 1854.
Jacob was also the author of "Soul and Manology," and was one of the founders of the West Pine Church, a small church near his home, along lower Mud Pine Creek. The church was commonly referred to as "Yellow Heaven," because of its yellow wallpaper. According to a Warren County history, published in 1927, the West Pine Church was located in the north part of the township, and one-half mile west of the Ade Way. The church was considered a religious center for both Warren and Benton Counties.

Jacob and his wife Mary Ann are both buried in the tiny West Pine cemetery, adjacent to where the church once stood. The cemetery, now hidden in a wooded area, is surrounded by an iron fence. It also contains the graves of three of their grandchildren, children of their son and their daughter-in-law, Henry Clay and Mary Wakeman Cassel (Cassus, Eugene and Corwin).
