Cula was born in Manchester, Blackburn, Lancashire, England to William Bradford Hayes and Ellen Pearson. She came over on the ship James Foster Jr. and landed at Castle Garden on 22 March 1858. She came with her mother and two younger brothers and a younger sister. In the census she is listed as a music teacher. She married George Lamberson on 1 November 1871 in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo, MI. To them two daughters were born Arletta and Blanche, neither daughter married and are buried with Cula and George in the old Schoolcraft cemetery.
