George B. Ashford was born sometime between 1843 and 1846, depending on the documents cited. He was probably born in Illinois, but some documents list his place of birth as Virginia. George was the son of John Ashford and Mariah Butcher. Mariah was the daughter of Ely Butcher and Elizabeth Hart. John and Mariah married on September 12, 1833. Compiling information from the various census data, it appears that their children may have been:

John Ashford born about 1835 in Virginia
Clayborn Ashford born about 1838 in Virginia
George B. Ashford born about 1845, probably in Illinois
Haemer Ashford born about 1848 in Kentucky
Rufus Ashford born about 1849 in Virginia
Hazen Ashford born about 1852 in Wheelersburg, Ohio
Hays E. Ashford born about 1855 in Wheelersburg, Ohio
Lorenzo Ashford born about 1860 in Wheelersburg, Ohio

In 1861 George enlisted in the Union Army in Kentucky. He served in Company E, 22nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Military records indicate he was captured at Perryville, Kentucky October 8, 1862. When he mustered out in January 1865, records reflect that he may have been as young as 18 years old.

George B. Ashford married Sarah Angeline Webb on January 14, 1868 in Scioto County, Ohio. In June 1870, George and Sarah were living in Wheelersburg, Ohio with son Sheridan born in August 1868 and daughter Maggie C. born in January 1870. Daughter Georgie Ashford, also sometimes named Edna Ashford, was born on February 12, 1877.

In 1880 George and Sarah were living in Hamilton, Warren County, Ohio, with son Sheridan age 12, daughter Ella age 10, daughter Lora age 9 and daughter Georgie age 3. Daughter Maggie is not listed. If living, she would have been about 11 years old. It is possible that she had passed away before 1880. In September of that year Georgie died at the age of 3.

About 1888 daughter Ella married Frederick W. Tebbe. On June 1, 1896, daughter Lora married Charles P. Dowlin. On August 1, 1903, son Sheridan married Carrie E. Tebbe.

In 1889, at the age of 44, George B. Ashford was admitted to the U. S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas.

In 1900 George was counted with his daughter Ella and her family in Bloom, Clay County, Kansas.
