Mariah Butcher was the daughter of Ely Butcher and Elizabeth Hart. She was the granddaughter of Samuel Butcher, Sr. and Hannah Drake, and the granddaughter of Edward Hart and Nancy Ann Stout. Mariah was the great-granddaughter of John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of independence as a representative of the colony of New Jersey.

Ely and Elizabeth Butcher had the following children:
1) Emily Butcher born in 1805, married Adam See in 1822.
2) Edith A. Butcher born in 1806, married Hugh Daily in 1823. She died in 1869.
3) Burrell B. Butcher born in 1808, married Julia Ann Rightmire. He died in 1841.
4) Thursey Butcher born in 1810, married Johnathan Arnold in 1827. She died in 1828.
5) John Hugh Butcher born in 1812, died in 1850, unmarried.
6) Mariah Butcher born in 1815, married John Ashford in 1833. She died in 1893.
7) Theodore Butcher born in 1817, married Eunice Stainaker in 1836. She died in 1893.
8) Rufus Butcher born in 1819, died in 1839, unmarried.
9) Edward Grady Butcher born in 1822, married Sallie Wilson. After her death in 1878, he married Susan E. Booth Teachore in 1882. He died in Iowa in 1892.

After Elizabeth Hart Butcher's death in 1823, Ely Butcher married Margaret Hart. Ely and Margaret had four more children.

On September 12, 1833 Mariah Butcher married John Ashford of Catletts, Kentucky. In Ely Butcher's handwritten will he names his daughter Mariah Ashford.

According to the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census, Mariah had the following children:

1) John Ashford born in 1835
2) Claiborne Ashford born in 1837
3) George Ashford born in 1845
4) Haemer Ashford born in 1848
5) Rufus Ashford born in 1849
6) Hazen Ashford born in 1852
7) Hayes Edward Ashford born in 1855
8) Lorenzo E. Ashford born in 1859

John Ashford is listed in the 1840 census for Randolph County, Virginia, with a wife and 4 children. Maria Ashford is counted twice in 1850, once in Jackson County, Virginia with sons George B. and Rufus, and once in Wood County, Virginia with sons John, George and Rufus. Son Claiborne is counted in the household with his grandfather Eli Butcher in 1850. In 1860 Mariah Ashford is living in Wheelersburg, Scioto County, Ohio, with sons George and Hamer and daughter Hazen. In 1870 Maria Ashford, still in Ohio, is in a household with sons Rufice, Hays E. and Lorenzo. In 1870 Maria Ashford is still residing in Wheelersburg, Ohio, with her son Lorenzo Ashford and her grandson Sheridan Ashford.

Mariah Ashford, widow of Ashford, is listed in Civil War surviving veterans and widows for Wheelersburg, Ohio in 1890. However, her name is scratched out and the notation by it reads "Conf". On the same page it is tabulated that Mr. Ashford died in the service. This can reasonably infer that the John Ashford whom Mariah Butcher married died in the service, and that Mariah was not entitled to a widow's pension in the state of Ohio because he fought for the Confederacy.

This might also be the reason Mr. Ashford is not listed with Mariah in the census records after 1840, and why she had no more children born after 1859.

The marriage record for Mariah's son Claiborne dated December 24, 1868, in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, states that his mother and father were John Ashford and Mariah Ashford.

According to the "Gibbens-Butcher Genealogy" by Alvero F. Gibbens, published in 1894, Mariah Ashford died in 1893 in Lyons County, Iowa.

Much of the information in this biographical sketch is taken from the "Gibbens-Butcher" publication, as well as the volume entitled "The Harts of Randolph" by Katherine Hart Frame, published in 1976.
