Harvey was born at Highland Park Farm, the Luck homestead in Kopp, Virginia. During WW II he served in the U.S. Army and was awarded both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. His final rank in the Army was Sgt. In 1943, while still a Pvt First Class, he was somewhere in England and had recently completed a course in military intelligence.
