GENOA, Wis.- Erwin L. Hastings, 45, R. 1, Genoa, was killed in a freakish accident while fishing in the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon.
Injured in the mishap was Donald Carson, 14, also of Genoa.
The party was fishing opposite the Bad Axe boat landing at Genoa, but on the Minnesota side of the river when a large tree toppled over striking the Hastings boat. It is believed the high water had loosened the tree's roots.
The tree struck Hastings across the back. Donald Carson is in La Crosse Lutheran Hospital.
Also in the party but not injured, were James Hastings and Lonnie Krause.
The report of the accident was received at 2:46 p.m. by the Vernon County Sheriff's Department.
Deputy Coroner James Hanson investigated.
