Centennial Edition of the Greenfield Gazette, dated February 1, 1892, Memorial Day oration delivered by Rev. John F. Moors, delivered on May 30, 1872. page 50
By the side of his father, of whom I have just spoken, in the same company, stood Henry J. BOWERS. He was born in Greenfield, May 23, 1843. He married Emily SMITH the day after he enlisted, which was on the same day as his father, Dec. 15, '63. On the 22d of the following September, he was slightly wounded at the battle of Fisher's Hill and taken to the hospital. His wound proved worse than was though at first and caused his death, on the 12th of October, '64. Nothing is known of his death and burial, only that he was buried in the National cemetery, at Winchester.

Henry J. Bowers is one of three enlistees from the same family viz: Henry BOWERS the father, Henry J. BOWERS oldest son, William BOWERS younger son, none of which survived the war.

34th Massachusetts Infantry in the Civil War
In December [1863] an expedition was made to Harrisonburg which almost resulted disastrously, the Union troops being pursued all the way back. The regiment was then in camp near Bolivar until Feb. 1, 1864, when it was ordered to Cumberland, Md. Several difficult marches and the battles of New Market, Piedmont, and Lynchburg followed, and then the hurried march in retreat to the Union lines. Without rest it was again on the march and took part in the battles at Snicker's gap, Winchester [Henry b.1732, dies Sep 14, 1864, bur. Winchester Nat. Cem.], and Martinsburg. It was in the engagements at Halltown, Berryville, Fisher's hill [Henry J., b. 1843, wounded Sep 22, dies Oct. 12, 1864, *bur. Winchester Nat. Cem.] and Cedar creek and in December [William J., b.1847, dies Dec. 28, 1864, bur. Antietam Nat. Battlefield Site] received orders to join the Army of the James before Richmond.
