OBITUARY:
Porter J. Dix, 74, Farmer, Postman, Dies At Residence
Porter J. Dix, 74, well-known Sullivan farmer and retired postman, died suddenly at his home on Sullivan R. 5 Tuesday afternoon at 3:30. He had just returned from a local physician's office.
Mr. Dix was a postman here for more than 30 years.
He was a member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge, Sullivan Council No. 73, Royal and Select Masters; Sullivan Commandery No. 54, Knight Templar; Jerusalem Lodge, Chapter 87 of Sullivan; Scottish Rite, Valley of Terre Haute; Zorah Shrine of Terre Haute, and the York Cross of Honors. Also of the Sullivan Order of Eastern Star and Sullivan Elks Lodge No. 911.
He is survived by the wife, Roxie; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Hluchan, of Indianapolis, Mrs. Estella Rushmur and Mrs. Frances Closs, both of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Emma Nash of Mystic, Conn; three sons, W. H. Dix of Scottsburg, Colo.; Gerald Dix with the U.S. Air Force in South Carolina, and Porter E. Dix of Bay Village, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Parr of Fairbanks, and Mrs. Laura Hayhurst of Sullivan; a brother, Lowell Dix of Sullivan, and 15 grandchildren.
All seven of Mr. and Mrs. Dix's children are graduates of Purdue University.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Alexander Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Merold officiating. Burial will be at the West Lawn Cemetery at Farmersburg. The Sullivan Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside services.
