Joseph F. Jensen Dies in Bingham

BLACKFOOT, Jan 9 ─ Joseph F. Jensen, 77, LDS Church leader and longtime member of the Groveland area, died Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. at his home after a lingering illness.

He was born June 10, 1880 at Brigham City, Utah, the son of Andrew C. and Annie M. Carlson Jensen. He spent his early days in Hyrum, Utah where the family moved when he was 2 years of age.

In the spring of 1855 the family moved to Blackfoot, where they rented different farms until 1901 when they settled in the Groveland community and made their family home. On Oct. 8, 1906 he was mar-ried in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple to Bertha Yancey.

He filled two missions for the church, one to the northern states and one to the southern states. He has served on the YMMIA Stake Board in the Blackfoot Stake as well as superin-tendent of the YMMIA in the Groveland Ward for several years. He also served as superintendent of the Sunday School, ward clerk, and a counselor in the Groveland Ward Bishopric. In 1930 he was called to serve as bishop of the Groveland Ward and served until his release in 1940. He is also served as a member of the School Board District 31 for a number of years.

He is survived by his widow, Bertha Y. Jensen, Groveland; and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Stanley A. (Donetta) Madsen, Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Irvin (Verba) Hancock, Menan, Idaho; Mrs. Melvin (Laurel) Burningham, Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Earl (Josephine) Gardner, and Ross Franklin Jensen, Pasco, Wash.; Mr. Calvin (Vonda) Thorpe, Chino, Calif.; Mrs. Charles (Phyllis) Hyde. Kenneit, Mo.; and Vernon Y. Jensen, Salt Lake City; by 42 grandchildren and two great grandchildren and the following brothers and sister: Andrew C. Jensen, Salt Lake City; Hyram L. Jensen, Moore; and Mrs. Sylvia Hale, Logan, Utah.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Groveland Ward LDS Church with Bishop Rulon J. Callister officiating. Burial will be in the Grove-land Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Howard Packham Mortuary Thursday evening and until 11 a.m. Saturday; then at the Groveland Church. Those desiring to do so may make contributions to the Salt Lake Primary Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers.
