Helen F. Seaver died peacefully at Douglas Manor in Windham on Saturday (September 13, 2008).
Mrs. Seaver was born July 24, 1922 in Worcester, MA, the daughter of the late Henry Elon and Annie May (Breatt) Albro. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald W. Seaver, and brother, William Albro of Scottsdale, AZ. Helen grew up in the Quinsigamond Village and was a member of the First Christian Church in Worcester. She graduated from the Worcester, MA High School of Commerce, class of 1940. She enrolled in the Training School for Attendant Nurses at Holden District Hospital, Holden, MA, in January, 1943 and worked for the Camp Fire Girls office in Worcester. Married to Donald W. Seaver in 1946, they moved to Providence Turnpike in Sutton, where they remained for 50 years. In addition to caring for her parents, Helen was a homemaker who was very active in parent/school organizations and Campfire Girls as her three children were growing up.
She made significant contributions to the band parents' organization outfitting the Sutton High School band in the 1960s with their first full set of uniforms. She was active in the First Congregational Church of Sutton Women's Club, Church School and Church Fairs. From 1968 to 1973, Helen was dispatcher for Sutton's Highway and Police departments, on call 24 hours a day. She was cited "for calmness and the impeccable grammatical construction of her lengthy sentences which pack facts and explanations together with unwavering pace and clarity." She subsequently worked in the school library and as secretary to the Sutton tax collector. At the time of her retirement in 1987, she and her husband Don were recognized for their "unselfish contributions to the town over the past 40 years." In 1997, Helen and Don moved to Storrs, where Donald died in October of 1998. A member of the Storrs Congregational Church, Helen resided at Douglas Manor in Windham from 2003 till her death. She enjoyed craft work, reading, and music, especially singing hymns and enjoying the sports and musical performances of her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family, friends and care-givers for her gentle, sense of humor, gracious spirit, and words of wisdom.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Barbara Seaver of New Gloucester, ME; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gwenn and Scott Marchese of Albany, OR and Pamela and Richard Roberts of Storrs; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at the Storrs Congregational Church with a reception to follow. There are no calling hours.
Burial will be in the Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne, MA on Monday, September 22, at 11 a.m.
