Bert Ezra Stephens, 89, life-long resident of Bear Lake County, passed away March 6 in Seattle, Wash. after a lingering illness.

He was born August 13, 1887 in Bennington, the eighth son and ninth of 13 children born to Charles and Elinor Owen Stephens.

He grew to manhood in Bennington, where he attended public schools and eventually entered into farming and ranching with his father and brother. In 1912, they formed a partnership and purchased a ranch closer to Montpelier where they soon moved. Eventually the boys bought out their father’s interests and worked as a partnership for several more years before becoming independent operators.

Stephens married Vivian Irving June 20, 1917 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived all their married life in the Montpelier Third Ward.

Six children were born to them. Two died at childbirth and the other four, three daughters and a son, survive their father, as does his widow, Vivian.

Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in the Montpelier Third-Fifth Ward Chapel on Friday, March 11, at 11 a.m., under the direction of Matthews Mortuary, with interment to follow in the Montpelier City Cemetery.
