Daniel Mason's parents, Joseph Mason from Salem County, New Jersey and Martha Burris from Stokes (Surrey) County, North Carolina were married in Highland County, Ohio in 1824. Daniel was born in Ohio in 1825, possibly in Highland County. The family moved in the late 1820s to Breckinridge County, Kentucky, and moved again in the early 1830s, settling in Owen County, Indiana.

Daniel Married Elizabeth E. Sloan on July 25, 1850, in Greene County, Indiana. They had four children together:
George Washington Mason (1851-1930)
Joseph A. Mason (1854- )
John L. Mason (1856- )
William E. Mason (1860-1930)

Daniel served in the 29th Indiana Infantry from December 16th, 1864 until his death in March of 1865, at the age of 39.
