Robert Hayes (Uncle Bob) McConnell, 81, former manager of the McConnell Service Funeral Home, died yesterday at his home after an illness of one year.

A native of Lauderdale County, Alabama, he came to Athens as a young man. In 1928 he became manager of the funeral home, which was owned by his brother, Probate Judge Addison McConnell, and served in that capacity until he went into semi-retirement in 1947.

He was a former Sunday School superintendent of the First Baptist Church of Athens and was active in civic affairs.

Funeral services were held today at 4 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Trent officiating. Burial followed in the Athens City Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Florence McConnell; a daughter, Mrs. Owen F. Herriing of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a son, A. M. McConnell of Louisville, KY; a sister, Mrs. Cora Jones, Rogersville; a brother, Ernest McConnell, Florence, AL; and five grandchildren.
