She was born in Athens, Ala., on Aug. 1, 1905, to Robert Hayes McConnell and Florence Agnes Farrington McConnell.
Mrs. Herring was a graduate of Athens Academy in 1921 and graduated from Rice Institute (University) in 1926. She returned to Athens College and taught biology and bacteriology. From 1927 to 1932, Mrs. Herring was Southwide student secretary for the Southern Baptist Convention. She was a counselor at Camp Julliette Lowe National Girl Scout Camp, where she taught courses in nature during the summer of 1927.
In 1932 she married Dr. Owen F. Herring, who preceded her in death in 1987.
At the time of his death, Dr. Herring was Wake Forest University's oldest professor emeritus. Mrs. Herring's career included authoring several books, one being published when she was 83. She was a longtime member of the Wake Forest Baptist Church.
Surviving are her four children and eight grandchildren, Owen Herring and his children, Catherine Macheret and Carol Augstadt; Robert Herring and his children, Bob Herring and Kim Herring; Ann H. Fox and her children, Lee Stephenson and Harriet Stephenson; and Richard Herring and his children, Hunter Herring and Judd Herring; four great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Davis Chapel on the Wake Forest campus conducted by Dr. Richard E. Groves. The family will greet friends after the memorial service. Private interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wake Forest Baptist Church, P.O. Box 7326, Winston-Salem, NC 27109.
