Mae Gilroy Dvorak, 91, of Lewiston and longtime Kooskia resident died Aug. 12, 2008, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
She was born Agnes Mae Gilroy on Oct. 11, 1916, at Kooskia, the first child of Myrtle (Judd) and Edward T. Gilroy. She graduated from Kooskia High School in 1932. She then received a degree in education from Lewiston State Normal College in 1935 where she played trumpet in the school band. After graduating, she taught at the Big Cedar country school near Kooskia. She married Charles "Chick" Dvorak on May 22, 1937, at Cleveland, Ohio, where Chick had relatives. Together, they raised three sons while making their home primarily in Kooskia with some time spent in Lewiston and Clarkston.
She served on the Kooskia City Council and was the Kooskia City Clerk for several years. She was also a member of the Kooskia First Presbyterian Church and the Rebekah Lodge.
Her many hobbies were knitting, crocheting, various crafts, and working puzzles of all kinds. At 91, she still worked the daily crossword puzzle in the Lewiston Tribune as she had done since she was 12 years old. She also enjoyed playing pinochle and bingo. She loved playing the piano and organ and provided piano lessons to many Kooskia area residents. She was a faithful fan of the Seattle Mariners rarely missing a televised game.
She was preceded in death on May 1, 1967, by her husband, Chick. She moved to Lewiston in 1995 with her mother, Myrtle, where they both were residents of Wedgewood Terrace assisted living center. She remained at Wedgewood after her mother died in 2000 at the age of 103.
She is survived by sons, Thomas and Mary Lou of Elko, Nev., Douglas and Kristin of Lewiston, Dale and Joyce of Kuna; her sister, Madge Matousek of Red Bluff, Calif.; and brother, Edward J. Gilroy of Lakewood, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia. Memorials can be sent to Kooskia Ambulance Fund at CVRU, P.O. Box 338, Kooskia, ID 83539.
