Joel Middleton, county's eldest citizen, dies

Funeral services were held last Friday for William Joel Middleton who for several years had held the title of Montgomery County's eldest resident.

Mr. Middleton was 101 1/2 years old at the time of his death. He was the father of A. B. Middleton and the grandfather of Dr. W. A. Middleton, both of Winona.

A native of Webster County, he had lived for the past several years in Montgomery County with his son.

Born in 1865, the descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Mr. Middleton was a storekeeper for 30 years. But he always considered farming his chief occupation and had some 600 acres in Webster County.

He farmed until his 93rd year, when he and his family decided that "was enough." He remained physically active until he neared his 100th birthday, and was mentally alert and interested in current events as he began his 102nd year.

His first wife, Betty Neal Middleton, died in 1928 after 40 years of marriage, and a second, Mrs. Ellie Swindoll Middleton, died several years ago.

An active church worker for most of his life, he first joined the Philadelphia Baptist Church at the age of 14 and served as a deacon for over 50 years. He was an honorary deacon of the church at the time of his death.

Last rites for Mr. Middleton were held at the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Webster County at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 17.

Rev. Paul Weddle of Bellefontaine officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery, with Lee Funeral Home of Winona in charge of arrangements. Survivors include six children: Rev. J. B. Middleton, Eupora; Austin A. Middleton, Lambert; A. B. Middleton, Winona; Edwin Middleton, Gore Springs; Mrs. Rudine M. Neal, Kilmichael; and Mrs. Ethel Salley, Duck Hill.

He had 24 grandchildren, 75 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Dan Middleton, Elbert Middleton, Bill Middleton, Talmadge Middleton, Billy Neal and Ottis Salley.
